What You Can Do With A Keylogger

Gecko-monitor-keyloggerTraditionally, a Keylogger is a program that you install on a computer to capture and log all the keystrokes that are pressed. When computers were just text based, this was pretty much all you needed, to see exactly what that computer was used for. Of course in those days, there were no emails, YouTube videos, photo editing or any other of the hundreds of activities you can use your computer for. So, as the digital age has developed, so has the humble keylogger; to be something a bit more technically advanced.

Whereas in the 1990s all you needed to monitor was keystrokes, now, to get the full picture, we'd need to monitor a whole lot more. So what exactly can you do with a modern day keylogger? And how exactly have they changed since their inception? Nowadays you're more likely to see them described as 'Computer Monitoring Software' rather than a keylogger, because of their more comprehensive feature set. So what activities can you monitor with this software?

Once the software has been installed, it will usually run in stealth mode, meaning anyone using the computer won't know they are being monitored. The software will organize any activity undertaken into logs, usually keeping track of at least the following:

  • Any keystrokes typed, with the date and time of entry.

  • Any website visited, with the date and time of the visit.

  • Any application used, with the date and time of the use.

  • Any file or documents opened/saved/deleted/etc. with the date and time of the activity.

  • Any file or documents printed, along with the date and time.

  • Anything copied and pasted to or from the clipboard.

  • Any emails sent received, along with the date and time.

As mentioned before, all of this will be organized into categories and tabs, so that you can easily browse through the logs and get a quick overview of what's been happening on the machine. These features are the standard set you'll see in most keylogger programs, although features will vary from developer to developer.

Another feature worth mentioning, that most programs will have is the ability to have the reports emailed to you secretly. If this is something that doesn't suit you, you'll be able to log back into the program at anytime by entering a secret key code and password, making the keylogger spring into life out of hidden mode.

If you'd like to read reviews of some of the top keyloggers available head over to Keylogger Downloads – the keylogger reviews website, where at the moment Gecko Monitor is holding the number one spot. Gecko Monitor has all the features mentioned above and more, and also has a free trial to see if you like the program.
